Major Changes

We often receive queries from site owners requesting either minor or major updates to their existing sites. This is a somewhat complicated process dependant upon the extent of the change to the site, and the amount of data that we gain access to. The key is the differentiation between what is perceived as a "minor" update to the client and what is technically a "major update" for us.

Actual access to the site is the first determinant, then the availability of the sites' source files becomes the next most critical issue. This differentiation in perceptions is also based on the reality that the sites' "source files" may or may not be available. Source Files are the computer files that were used to create the original site content, and were converted to final "web-viewable" versions. After years of web design and development, we have designed a simple procedure (illustrated in the drawing below ↓) that addresses these issues. The determination of "minor" or "major" update is simply based on the technical availability of site content, not on the total amount of change, or the percentage of change, to the contents of the site. After any changes are completed, tested and accepted, we offer each client a complete Site Maintenance Agreement which ensures priority status whenever additional changes are requested.

Steps to a typical website update............

1Site Access-
One key issue is access to the site itself. With no access to the site available, the client has an option to leave the existing site as-is, or, to create a new site. We provide a set of options to each client which allows them to determine which option is to most beneficial in terms of costs versus Return-On-Investment.
4Major Changes-
Major changes to a website can involve any level of change to the content of the site requiring that its' original source files be modified. If the level of change is such that the source files must be remade, then the scenario involves a new site design. Basic portions of the site can be altered during a major change, including:

° Altering, modifying, or adding to the code that runs the site.
° Making changes or additions to the site content itself (i.e. adding pages, objects, or features to a current style and layout).
° Making changes to the graphical or media content of the site, including modifying and adding images, movies, sound or other media.
° Changing the actual data or data collection and handling methods for data-driven sites (activities such as updating "shopping carts" or enhancing blog content).

Most changes are considered major if the source files for the site can be modified or added to. Major changes can be incorporated into an existing website based on any of the following criteria:

     1) There is access to the site and directories containing the sites' viewable and non-viewable contents.
     2) There is direct access to the source files that were used to create the site. Either provided by the client, or provided by the site creator.
     3) The client desires to keep the same basic style and layout of the site and does not want to create a new site either from a new, original design or from a template.

2New Site?-
If a new site is requested we will make every attempt possible to salvage any part of the existing site that can be retrieved. This includes any code, content, data, or graphics that can be can recycled into the new site. Generally this is not a major effort as basic site contents can usually be downloaded from the site as viewed on the internet. Sometimes the process is more involved. This initiates the new site design process.
3Minor Changes-
Minor changes include any modifications that are requested that can be completed without access to the sites' source files. This includes items such as:

° Source code modifications.
° Changes to images being displayed (such as adding, deleting and renaming images).
° Changes to the page text and basic content.
° Changes that can be accomplished by adding or modifying any scripts or style sheets that control the page/site visible style.
